Political Corruption

Business wasn't the only way to get rich in the late 19th century—there was also politics. The Tweed Ring, a group of corrupt New York City officials led by William March Tweed (1823-1878), is believed to have stolen anywhere from $40 million to $200 million in public funds. Many of these men saw no wrong in what they did. One of Tweed's cohorts, George Washington Plunkett, explained his form of "honest graft" to a journalist as follows: "I seen my opportunities and I took 'em .. . I'm tipped off, say, that they are going to lay out a new park at a certain place ... . I go to that place and I buy up all the land I can and then there is a rush to get my land. Ain't it perfectly honest to charge a good price and make a profit on my investment and foresight? Of course, it is. Well, that's honest graft."

Do you agree that there is such a thing as "honest graft"? Do you think politicians should be allowed to profit from insider information?

  1. I agree that there is such thing as honest graft.Since there are still people that are using it. Politicians in my opinion should not be allowed to profit from insider information. It is their job to bring in the information. So they are already paid for it.There is no need to give them any more than that.

  2. no i don t agree that there is something called honest graft. Even though there is honest graft it still wouldn't be good because people will want more for them self. Politicians should now be allowed to profit for insider information because then they are thinking its a good thing but it actually not

  3. I agree that there is no such thing as "honest graft".Also I think that politicians should not profit from insider information. The reason is that the politicians are supposed to help us people and they get paid for doing these things. Why do they get more money from the info that they are supposed to give us?

  6. There's no such thing as honest graft, it's still cheating and stealing. I don't think politician should have inside information, because it don't make them honest or fair. They should not know just like you and me. How much more can they benefit, they're already important, it's not like their going to get more important. Politicians are rich already they don't need more money.

  7. I Don't agree that there is such thing as honest graft, I think politicians should not be allowed to profit from insider information because you will have to pay. Even though you are doing it legally but still you are just trying to cover up by the illegal things you did.
