Child Labor

Mary Harris Jones, also called Mother Jones, was a well-known union organizer at the turn of the century. In 1903, she led a "March of the Mill Children" from Philadelphia to New York City. The young workers carried placards that read, "We want to go to school," and "We want time to play." As a result of the march,Pennsylvania made child labor illegal.

Why do you think children were sent to work in the first place? How do you think children and families felt when child labor laws were passed? Why might these laws have been viewed as a mixed blessing? What do you think could have been done to make child labor unnecessary?

  1. Ever since child labor laws were passed children and families must have felt devastated. The reason is because families will have to force their kids to work for so little money.Children are probably sent for work because people thinks that youngsters have more energy than them.So if they do all the work there would be less to do.That was why is was viewed as a mixed blessing. To make child labor unnecessary I think that they couldve decrease the amounts of jobs and move to other places with jobs.So people would have to risk their lives doing that so money could be earn.If they want money without using kids moving around could be a suggestion.

  2. I think children were to work in the first place was because many people need to work their own stuff and childrens work more faster. I think families felt. Very happy and sad because the children's can earn money and happy because there is no dangerous work for them to do, they will have time to play and go to school. If there was no forcing for kids to do all work and make machines to do then child labor will be unnecessary.

  3. I think children was sent to work because the family might want to earn more money for their family since the adults are making less money. I think the children were happy because they are free of torture but the parents would have felt sad because they might want their kids to work so they can earn a little bit more money for the family. If the adults were paid more then child labor would be unnecessary because the adults could earn more money instead of earning less and making the kids work to earn money with them.

  4. I think children were send to work because they can get more done and get paid more than parents get paid.i think the children were happy because they won't have to work in dangerous jobs but the parent would feel sad because they will have to work more for shelter and food

  5. I think children were sent to work because their parents owed factory owners money.I think that the children were delighted because they we're allow to go to school and learn. The parents will also be happy because they are able to see their children happily go to school and learn.child labor was a mixed blessing because even though child labor was a bad thing but it also helped others. One thing that could of made child labor unnecessary is the assembly line.It would of make people do certain jobs and would not need to pay as much money to others.

  6. I think childern were sent to work because there families probably was not making enough money .I think childern and families were both sad and realived when the law was passed that child labor was illegal because even though it was tough on the ids it made enough money for the families to still have a roof over there heads .These laws might have been viewed as a mixed blessing because it stops the hard labor of little kids but still takes an oppurtunity for there family to make money.I think there should have been a law where certain people struggling finiaclly should get a check from the government to support their family to make child labor unnecessary

  7. I think children was sent to work in the first place so they could help their family, some children was forced to work by employers who didn't want to pay them. There were many orphans that factory owners used.I think both the children and their families were happy about the child labor law passing, I think maybe the children were happier. Maybe that was the only way families to get money, that's why it was mixed blessings I think.

  8. To add to my last comment. I think if parents were getting good pay from their employers then they wouldn't have sent their children to work

  9. I think children were sent to work in the first place because to help prevent families from starving. I think children felt happy when child labor laws were passed because now they could get education and play with other child. These laws have been viewed as a mixed blessing because its harming the child but you could also earn money. I think the thing that could have been done to make child labor unnecessary was to not start the child labor.
