On May 3, 1886, police fired into a crowd of striking workers at McCormick Reaper Company in Chicago, killing four people. The strikers held a protest rally the next day at Haymarket Square. A bomb exploded during the rally and killed seven police officers. The rally's organizers were quickly arrested and convicted, despite the fact that the actual bomber was never identified. Four men were hanged and three were jailed. Illinois governor John Peter Altgeld (1847-1902) pardoned the three survivors in 1893, a move that ruined his political career.
Do you think the organizers of the rally should have been convicted? What do you think of Governor Altgeld? Would you have done as he did and pardoned the survivors? Would you have done so even if you knew it would cost you your career? Have you ever had to make a decision where doing what was right would hurt you in some way? Explain.
I don't think that the organizers of the rally should of been convicted because they were only protesting and had nothing to do with the bombing.I think that governor Altgeld is to forgiving person. Also I would of hanged the three pardoned persons to make a example out of them even if it would cost my career I still would hang those people for the people's good.No I do not remember any decision I have made that hurt me in any way.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the rally should of been convicted because they might have nothing to do with the bombing and how is it wrong that they want whats right for them, but end up being dead? I think Governor Altgeld believes that those 3 survivors were innocent. I would of pardoned the survivors because I think they have the right to protest whats good for them. I still would of pardoned them but before that happens I want to find out the truth first before pardoning the 3 survivors. I did not have to make a decision once that hurt me in any way.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the rally people should be convicted because they were only protesting.i think governor altgeld was a kind man because he pardoned the survivors even it cost his careers and maybe he thought they were innocent too. Yes I would of done the same thing as him even though it will cost my career because they have the right and it wasn't their fault. I don't have to make a decision that hurt me in other way
ReplyDeleteI think that the organizers of the rally should have been convicted.Protesting can persuade people to do things that aren't normal.Govenor Altgeld should have realized that and try to solve the problem.Or he couldve made less victims by trying to calm the protesters by giving them what they want for now.If I were him I wouldn't have pardoned the survivors. There is a chance that one of them could have been the culprit for the bombing. Pardoning them mightve been what i wouldve done but I would still think twice before doing so.If i couldnt,I will think of a suitable punishment. In life there are always mistakes thats why nobodys perfect.Especially in choice making.Sometimes the decision you make can give you a negative effect.Like if you choose to play games instead of doing homework. You end up having a low grade hence making you regret that choice. Although Governor Altgeld mightve made a good choice even if it ruined his political career.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the rally people should be convicted because they just wanted to protest for what they wanted.I think altgeld was a nice man because he didn't kill the rest of the protester only the bombers.I also think Altegeld was a kind man because he believe the other three who survived.
