The Gilded Age and the Progressive Movement

You live in a big-city neighborhood in the 1890's. You and your brother are both looking for jobs. You know that the man down the street is the “ward boss.” He can always get city jobs for his friends and neighbors. But in return you’ll have to promise to vote the way he tells you to in the upcoming election.
Would you ask the ward boss for a job?
Why or why not?

  1. I would ask for a job from the ward boss because we will need the job and the money to take care of each other. If we don't ask him for a job it may take way long for us to be accepted for another job but until then we would be starving and thirsty.

    1. I agree with you because without job to get food to eat, you will be dying. So if you do what is told, you will be saved just in return to vote for what he wanted you to.

  3. i wouldn't because he might be a bad man and he could ruin the country. 2 life bad is better than a whole country bad so i would decide not to work with him. also there is many others that can help me find a job. plus there is many other s jobs that you might need help in or want workers thus i would not

  4. I would ask for that job because it's really hard to get a job in that period of-course for two people. We need the job so badly otherwise we won't have any money, a place to live or foods to eat. SO, i will ask him for it and will vote the way he said since the job is more important to me in that situation.

  5. i would not ask him for a job. if he was to get an president or politic officials that benefits him and his factory it would be unfair. if he was to raise the wages then yes. if he doesnt it is useless working for him because the poor would die more and the economy would on;y be with people with factories.

  6. I would not get a job from the ward because i have a right to vote for who i choose because that is one of the right we get as a citizen and he is bribing us with jobs.

  10. I will ask the ward boss for the job because i need the money so bad and i need to feed my family. The electing president wasn't a priority for the people back then so i would get the job before somebody else coming out of nowhere took my job

  11. i would not ask “ward boss” for a job because it was against the law to vote the way he want and I could still find a job that without doing somehing illegal.

  15. i would listen to the ward if he's able to get me a job in the city because the amount that i would win be higher then a towns job and all i would have to is vote for him.

  16. (seewing zheng) i would not because if i vote for someone who is bad and they might make our life even worse then it was before. Then we are going to be in trouble and our wages might go down. it is an 50 50 chance of having a good president or a horrible president.
