Immigration Restrictions

Throughout history, Congress has passed laws to restrict immigration. Sometimes these laws were aimed at specific countries, like the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, which barred Chinese laborers from entering the United States for 10 years. Others were aimed at entire regions, such as the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924, which limited immigration from Europe. Others were aimed at classes of people, such as an 1882 immigration act that barred entry to criminals, paupers, and the insane, among others.

Why do you think Congress passed some of these restriction acts? Do you think Congress always acted honorably? Should anyone who wants to live in the United States be able to live here, or should there be some restrictions on immigration? Defend your thinking. If you believe there should be restrictions, explain what they should be.

  1. The Congress had to pass law since they want to keep their reputation clean. Their act was not honorable, if it was then there would be no exclusion acts and they would allow anyone to get in to the U.S. Everyone should have the right to live here freely. Without any restrictions because we are a free country. Once we put shackles on immigrants we would be going against our own words.

  2. I think the Congress had to pass laws to give others punishments for doing the wrong thing. I don't think the Congress always acted honorably because they have good and bad sides. I think there should be a restriction on immigration because if immigrants come to the US freely, then the US would be over populated.

  3. I think the Congress pass this laws to save the country from crime and bad things. Meanwhile, I think the congress always doesn't act honorable because they also have some bad sides that wasn't good for the Country and peoples. Also, i think there should be a restriction on immigration to the country because if immigration was freely for everyone then United State will became over population and the level of crime can increase.
