Give Me Your Tired

"Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor • • Millions of immigrants who passed through Ellis Island were welcomed by the sight of the Statue of Liberty on Bledsoe Island in New York Harbor The base of the statue is inscribed with a poem written by American poet
Emma Lazarus
".. . Give me your tired, your poor. Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Imagine you are an immigrant seeking freedom from war in Russia or hunger in Ireland. Write how you would feel seeing the Statue of Liberty after your long voyage across the Atlantic.

  1. After seeking freedom from war in Russia I finally see the Statue of Liberty. It has been a long and difficult journey due to the voyage across the Atlantic. Once I saw the green lady I knew this was the free land. I jump up in joy thinking that I would be free now. There would be no more fighting in this land. I am very fortunate to get into to this country.

  2. I would be happy when I see the Statue of Liberty because I would be free from the war and free from hunger. I would also be happy to finally get a stretch and some fresh air after being in the ship for so long.

  3. After gaining my freedom from the war and I finally see the Statue of Liberty, I would be really happy and relieved knowing that I'm free. I would also be very grateful for my freedom. I made such a difficult journey to get to America. I probably would've cried tears of joy knowing that I'm free from hunger and war.
