Reconstruction

The South was devastated physically, economically, and spiritually after the Civil War. Lincoln's Plan was to bring back rebellious states into the union with as little trouble for them as possible. After Lincoln's death, his successor, Andrew Johnson, wanted to follow to follow Lincoln's plan, however, Radical Republicans wanted to make it much more difficult for states that seceded to rejoin the Union. The Radical Republicans were more powerful than Johnson and had their way. They divided the South into military regions under the command of generals. They also required the states to adopt constitutions that allowed blacks to vote and to accept the 14th amendment, which extended citizenship to blacks.
Based on what you know about Reconstruction, which plan would you choose, the moderate plan like Lincoln or the harsher plan like the Radical Republicans?
Why do you think many northerners wanted to make it difficult for southern states to rejoin the Union?  Support you answer with facts.

  1. After the war the southern people were a very weak nation. Lincolns successor (Andrew Johnson) felt he should follow Lincolns plan?
why, Andrew was from the south. Lincoln was a northerner? Andrew was in favor of slavery!?!?!?

We would choose the moderate plan like Lincoln's because his plan didn't actually required anything else but just a peace treaty with the south. But, for Johnson's plan,it made the Radical Republicans wanting to make it much more difficult for the South to reunite with the Union. In the text, it states" however, Radical Republicans wanted to make it much more difficult for states that seceded to rejoin the Union." This quote shows that the Radical Replublicans didn't want the South to be a part of the Union again because of the fact that the South wanted to do things the way they desired.

  5. Base on what i know about Reconstruction , I would choose the moderate plan like Lincoln, since Lincoln was deciding to free slaves, and bring south back to the union. His decision were mostly correct, and positive. However, he once used the army to warn the Southern state , for using slaves. I belief that his decisions were all justified . To add on,I think that many northerners wanted to make it difficult for southern states to rejoin union, was simply because of they've once used slaves. Since the north had a war with the south , on the point of slavery. - Jason 802

  14. 1) I would rather choose Abraham Lincoln's plan because the way he was trying to solve the problems and try to reunite his country was a better way than the radical republicans were trying to do. All Abraham was going to do was make the south swear on make them give an oath that they wee never going to do it again. He wasn't going to go to war or start a fight or do anything harmful in any way.
    2) Many northerners were making it difficult for southern states to rejoin the Union because they didn't want it to go back to the same old thing. They didn't want to have to go to war and have the southern states still be rebelling as if they were the ones in charge. The northerners wanted "all men to be equal" literally. The blacks had the same rights as the white people since they were born. They shouldn't even be going through so much of a struggle to get back the rights they already had.

I think that the Republicans plan was much better than Lincoln's old plan. This is because if they weren't as harsh to them as they had been then the South could have rebelled against accepting the end of slavery. The Northerners tried to make it hard for the South to rejoin the union because they wanted revenge and to make sure that the South really followed the new amendments. They wanted to keep the South in order so that they wouldn't try anything else and go around those laws.

People mostly agree to his plan because Lincoln's plan doesn't use violence to calm and let the south rejoin the country. Moreover the Radical Republicans want to make the states that seceded more harder to rejoin the country. Their plan was a very harsh plan. The south and north mostly will agree with Lincoln's plan and disagree with the Radical Republican's plan. Therefore both of the plans was to bring back the south but one is harsh and one is not which is the better plan in my opinion.

  59. i think that Lincoln's plan is better because his plan is to freed the slaves and let the south reunion. it is a great plan because then everyone will be like before where there is no slaves. While the radical republican plan is to let it hard for the south to reunion. this make slavery not ending and support slavery.the northerner want it harder for the south to reunion because they dont want it just for the south to reunion easily.

  60. I will choose Lincoln's Reconstruction plan because it was harsher than radical republicans. Its plan extended black people citizenship, they get right to vote. They have time to rebuilt it and solve the conflicts between the Republicans and Democrats

  61. I would choose the harsher plan the radical republicans made up.The reason why the north would try to make it harder for the south to come back is because they both had different opinions and the radical republicans had more power over Johnson (the current president).I can support this by quoting from the text "The Radical Republicans were more powerful than Johnson and had their way." Edita and Maytha 814

  62. Based on what i know about reconstruction, i perfer Lincoln's plan. Lincoln's plan was to rebuild the South and make it better. He wanted to rebuild the South as easy as possible without any viloence. The radical's Republicans wanted to make it difficult for the South to rejoin the North. I agree with Lincoln's paln because it was a peaceful plan and the south wouldn't leave again. After a long war and coming back together, they wouldnt want another problem and cause disagreements. The North wanted to make it difficult for the South to rejoin the North because what if the South rebelled again. The north has to make sure the South doesnt leave again and make things difficult for the freed slaves. -Angela Zhang

  63. I would choose Abraham Lincoln's plan. Lincoln's plan was to bring back rebellious states into the union with as little trouble for them as possible. This can help the U.S to stay united. I think the reason why the northerner wanted to make it difficult for the south to rejoin the Union is because they still think that the south have some separation between them.- Mei Yan Li 814

  66. After reading the passage Reconstruction, I think radical republican's plan is better than Lincoln 's plan because even though their plan is harsher but it can unit the country better. They have their way and let the African American vote and to be equal like the whites, they made the 14th amendment and let it happen.

  67. I agree with Lincolns plan, because his plan is much easier. It is also beneficial to the country. On the other side, Johnson is making the plan too complicated and bad for the southerners. Johnson went too far from the original plan. Lincoln wanted to bring the nation back together in a peaceful way. Johnson is being too harsh on the South, it would be much better if he would stick to Lincolns plan.

I agree with Lincolns plan, because his plan was peaceful, and it was much help than radical republican's plan because radical republican's plan was too Harsh, if there was too harsh they may start another civil war,or dispute. but Lincolns plan was much easier, and Lincoln wanted to bring them back together , not give a other civil. so I choose the Lincolns plan.

Lincoln's plan seemed more rational if you ask me. The South didn't react well to the harsher plan of he radical republicans. Would you like being in the same situation as the south? It would seem obvious that the best was to go is the way with the least trouble.

We agree with Lincoln's plan, because Lincon's plan was very simple. He just wanted south to be rejoin union. Andrew Johnson, wanted to follow to follow Lincoln's plan, however, Radical Republicans wanted to make it much more difficult for states that seceded to rejoin the Union.

  78. I would pick the moderate plan which is the Lincoln way. The reason I would run with his plan is because, I put myself in the African Americans position, they had to deal with slavery for One Hundred years, and im pretty sure at that time they just wanted to be treated equal. I mean just put yourself in the African Americans shoes. Then you would continue to moderate Lincoln's plan.

  89. I agree with Abraham Lincoln's plan because Radical Republicans make South more unlike North, they even hate North because of Sherman 's plan, and it make their country fall apart(collapse),and Lincoln's plan is make the country come back together, and be equal and free. His plan is not to fight and have war.His pan is to make the country come back, and North and South friendly. He want South to be part of America, and give slave free and equal life.

Because, North and South just have a War. South people kill Abraham Lincoln. And South hate North because Sherman bring the soldier to destroy South. So they hate each other.
