Child Labor

Mary Harris Jones, also called Mother Jones, was a well-known union organizer at the turn of the century. In 1903, she led a "March of the Mill Children" from Philadelphia to New York City. The young workers carried placards that read, "We want to go to school," and "We want time to play." As a result of the march,Pennsylvania made child labor illegal.
Why do you think children were sent to work in the first place? How do you think children and families felt when child labor laws were passed? Why might these laws have been viewed as a mixed blessing? What do you think could have been done to make child labor unnecessary?

  1. Children was sent to work because family need money to support their family so they can eat and buy supplies. Families and childrens world feel very sad because they won't be able to ave enough money to eat and buy things. Child labor is a mixed blessing because some childrens would think that it is a good thing that they dont have to work long hours anymore but other kids think that they would have to starve because they dont have enough money to buy food. Thing that coould happen to dont have child labor is government donating to families that needs money or the pay for the parents raise so they could support the family,

The kids were sent to work in child labor becuase their family didnt have enough money thats y the kids and the parents worked i the factory and made money together but still they didn't earn enough money bacuase the owner of the factory didnt pay much enough money thats y the family were poor and some of the kids went to school then after the school they worked 6 hours and other kids who didnt fo to school they worked 12 hours a day with out no rest it was very tough for them and it was good when law passed for the kids who can go to school because they dont need to work anymore they can go to school learn how to read & write and get a better job and money too and also it was bad for some of them because of the the reason why i am saying is because some family were too much poor that they needed money the coudnt work it was very said too

  2. Childrens were sent to work in the first place because their parents couldn't support the family by themselves, so the oldest childrens of the family have to pitch in and help their parents support their younger siblings. Childrens and families felt many emotions when the child labor were passed. Childrens felt happy that they don't have to work in factories for long hours but also sad that they couldn't earn money to help their parents support their younger siblings. Parents, on the other hand, were angry because they could no longer send their childs to the factories to work. The pay that they childrens received came toward the whole family. These laws might have been viewed as mixed blessing because after child labor laws were passed, childrens couldn't work in the factories anymore. Although they couldn't work to help their parents support their younger siblings. I would have done to make child labor unnecessary is that if they did something nice we could give them a little fee.

  3. The children went to work in the first place to earn money for their poor families. When child labor was passed, children and families would be sad and humiliated. Child labor limits their family bonding time. These laws might have been viewed as a blessing because children helps the factory to produce faster for use. People should show that child labor is unnecessary because children suffer from hard work every single day. - Ethan Bugna 814

  4. I think cildren had to go to work so the family can earn a bit of money. For example, there were many poor families back then due to immigration and the children had to work to earn some pay. After the child labor laws were passed I think that children were very happy they can relax and chill. However, adults and factory owners didn't really like the child labor laws. This is because they want the cildren to work since parents want money and factory owners want children since they're willing to ork long hours for low pay. These laws were viewed as mixed blessings because some people were happy because the children can go to school and the children can go to higher education. However some people wanted child labor so they can earn money and factory owne want it so that children can work long hours for low pay. To mak childe labor unneccesary, the government can lend some money to the poor families. Another way is to let the lazy adults work and let the children not work.

  5. because their family don't have enough money they are also angry when the law is pass because the family have one less person to work and food and other survival thing will be not enough.these are view as mixed blessing because the children are happy however the parent and factories owner are because the parent have to work more and the factories worker need to pay more for adult.Government can give money to the owner so they have money to pay and the can use immigrant since they can pay them less because they need job when they come to this new place.

3.Not all people think it a blessing thing the owner of the factory it a bad thing because they need to hired peoplewith much more money

  7. Children were send to work in the first place because their parent income are too low to support the whole family. Therefore the children need to work in order to feed everyone in the family. Upset and anger because if the children doesn't work then the family will starve to death because there is not enough money to buy food. It might be view in mixed blessing because the children are freed from all the dangerous work and abusing from their boss, but the family might not have enough money to support the entire family. Something that could make child labor unnecessary is migration. The immigrant from the migration can work in the factory instead of children because they need money and they'll do anything for it even if it means less pay.

  8. families sent there children to work for many reasons. A lot of immigrant families needed the money to survive. For some families in England, they had to sell there children to mills. Families needed the extra money. If child labor was abolished then families would be angry because they need a lot of people in the family to make money. It is a mixed blessing because now their children can read write and play. however now the parents had to work the most hours. To make child labor unnecessary, they need to pay their worker's more. ashar akhtar 814

  12. 1. Childrens were sent to work due to the low stander of living they have, if they don't work, they will have to starve to death.
    2. This depends on how much the family love their child, but in the first place, the families that send their child to work would have been gracful for this law, because now their children can go to work and bring in more profits. While, the one who doesn't send their child to work just innore this law (they have no feelinf toward it!!),because they're don't need it at all.
    3. It's mix blessing, because it can bring more income to the family but cause many injure and death. Also, now the children can't go to school and can't have time tho have fun.
    4. I think that the government should help start fundations to donate clothes and food to the poor families to make child labor unnessary. This way, it will increase the families' stander of living, so the childrens wouldn't have to work

  14. Children were sent to work because their families' low income could not afford the families' daily spending and they were lack of money. I think children and their families would feel gland about the passing of child labor laws as they could work less hours and have more free time. The child labor laws was good for children, since they could have time to relax and do whatever they want; meanwhile, their boss and factory owners would hate the laws, since children worked less hours made them loss money. in order to make child labor an unnecessary thing, the government should banned it totally; meanwhile, the government should help the poor families from lack of money. by Darth Vadar the Xander 814

  15. Children were sent to work in the first place because during that time they really had no choice in the matter because they needed the money and their money combined with their parents money could barely feed the whole family and save them from starvation.I think the children were devastated from the fact that they couldn't play or act like normal children and were in the circumstance they couldn't reject the offer because they needed the money.I think the families were happy because that they had another source of income. These laws might of been seen as a mixed blessing because the family could get more money to support them but the children where not having the freedom that children had now a day's.I think they could have created more jobs that fit with the people who were less experienced and gave the people more pay for the jobs they did.

Children were sent to work because the family needs the money. They need it for food, rents, and other needs. Family might sell there son/daughter to work or they would work part time. When the child labor was passed children did not like it. They didn't have time for education and no time to play. Parents like and unlike the child labor, children can help there family to earn money. In the other hand parent might miss there child and don't want them to work but they really need the money. The laws might be mix of blessing because children can't get any education and might get sick really easy. They have to do dangerous job that might cause death. Also the air is full of dust it cause the child to get brown lung. Children was pay little amount with long periods of working. It is good because child can help the family and mill owners would need the kid to work and give them little amounts. Things that could be done to make child labor unnecessary is to don't let them work long period of time and pay them more.

This is because, thye dont have to work long hours anymore and they now thye coud go to school to learn how to read and write. Also, now they have time to have fun.But the families were not as excited as the children were because now they are gonna have less money. These laws have been viewed as a mixed blessing because the parents earned more money and the children were protected because they didn't have to work in the dangerous conditions anymore in the factories. Things that could have been done to make child labor unnecessary is by donating money and clothing to the poor families.

  21. Children were sent to work in factories because their parents didn't have enough food to support their whole family. Their kids had to go to work and help their parents in order to not starve. Children's and parents felt many emotions when the child labor was passed. The child labor laws stated that you have to be sixteen to work in a mill, fourteen to work, and you can't work before seven am and not after seven pm. The childrens were happy that they don't have to work for so long and at such a young age. They could go outside to play and learn to read and write. Their parents don't have to worry about the childrens getting injured and killed in the factories. However, some parents were angry that their kids couldn't earn more money to support their entire family. The good part was that the entire family won't have to starve but the bad part is that many kids were killed working in the factories. To make child labor unecessary, they could hired immigrants that needed jobs. The factory owners hired immigrant so that they could pay them less money which benefits the factory owners. Childrens don't have to work anymore if other immigrants came and work.

  23. I think that children were sent to work in the first place because their families were too poor to afford necessities so survive. When child labor laws were passed i believe that the children and families were excited because now they will have time to get a education as well as having time to play. These child labor laws were saw as a mixed blessings by people because with the children out of the factories, there will be less workers in the mills which means less products being made. It would be seen as an advantage though because children were free from relentless work. These laws may have never be needed if child labor was not necessary. The government could have lowered the taxes on the poor and give annual pay to them. This will give the poor an opportunity to have money while the parents work. The kids can go to school and play while their parent go to work and get money from the government yearly. It provides them more support to their family in buying food, clothes, shoes, books, etc.

  24. Obviously , children were sent to work , since they cant afford much to survive.Which explains why parents have been selling their children to survive from hunger. After the child labor law is passed , i believe that most children would be excited and would be hoping to have a normal, usual, non-complex childhood , where you could go to school and have time to play. However , not everyone would support this law. For example , parents would need children to work for some "more" money to support the whole entire family(ies) which also affects the factory workers, since children were pay less and now they have to hire adults which cost more to hire. In addition , the government could of support the poor families , by donating some shelters , food , or clothes . Also the government can lower taxes, which is why a large amount of families are worrying about money. These little changes can help a lot of families and would make those children have a better and easier life. -Jason 802

I think the children were very happy that the laws were passed , because they could actually have a kid life. I think the families were mad because they needed more money and now they wouldnt get the money they needed and they wont be able to provide for their families to survive. It would be a mixed blessing because kids would be able to be kids but families would be mad because they would have less money. 27. I think that the reason why children were sent to the first place was that their family is poor and if their children don't go to work, then they won't be able to pay off their wages. I think that families were mostly upset about child labor laws becuase when their children was getting sick, killed, or injured while performing dangerous tasks just to earn a dime an hour. These laws have been viewed as blessings because many bosses are lacking employees and they were runing out of money because their bussiness wasn't going to well. To make child labor unnecessary, they could've raised their pay checks instead of getting paid 10 cnets an hour when the people are barely resting and children are lacking their education.

  30. Children were sent to work because they needed to work for their families. Even though there parents might be working too, their children still have to work to earn enough money for food, clothes, shelter,etc..Some families would even sell their children's because they are THAT poor. Children's don't even have education to read or write. They don't even have free time. They just need to work every single day, even single hour, every single second. I believed that when the law were passed, families and children's would be really excited and happy. Children's would get more opportunity to get education. They would get free time to play with others. In my opinion, these laws are not needed. The government should give the poor's about 1 dollar each month( Back then, 1 dollar equals $27.03 now.). And , they should lower taxes for the poor's. The government should build more schools, so that more and more children's can learn, and to have education.

4 I think it could have been done to make child labor unnecessary because
the children can attend to the school, they can do something they want, and
when they learn a lot of things, they will get the job. some kids will make our life better like a the scientist, but if they go to the work, they might not have the smart brain.

  44. I think children were sent to work because their family didn't money to support the cost of living. While the child labor laws were passed, children could have time to play and have education; however, parents wouldn't support this law. Parents thought that if the time of working was cut short, their children wouldn't make as much money as they originally did. Child labor laws might be viewed as mixed blessing because some citizens thought that children didn't have to work long hours. They would have time to do other things such as education. On the other hand, parents who were poor said that their children couldn't make enough money to support costs for food. The government could make child labor unnecessary by donating food, water, and money to the poor. Also, they could set up programs to ask for volunteers to help the poor. Yu Han Wu 804

Child labor was necessary because many families were very poor and needed all their family members to work to support the family. When child labor laws were passed, there were a lot of mixed feelings and opinions. Many families that needed the money were upset because without their children working, it meant less money for the family. On the other hand, many children that were sold into working in factories or were orphans were relieved that they were not forced to work anymore. They would finally have time to learn and play. Child labor would've been unnecessary if adults were able to work in it instead of children. If families weren't as poor then they wouldn't have needed their child to be working. Also if the factories conditions weren't as bad, then people might have been actually willing to work in the factories.

Child labor was put into place because of poor famlies had to have more people working in the house-hold.Poor families needed more money to buy food for their family. To have money kids had to work in factories. These factories had horriable working condisons and many people got injured and some even got killed. When anti-child labor laws got passed kids thought this was a blessing while the poor families saw it as less money coming in,the factories saw it as less workers. It even last to today were kids can't work but go to school a thing we take advantage of now.Better machines could have help to make child labor unnecessary, and more people going to school would have made people smarter and to do more to advance the way of living
