Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox means that since Seward purchased Alaska it was his frozen wasteland. This statement is not true because once people started finding out there was gold here they went to Alaska persuing there dream of getting rich. Also, the fact that there was oil under the surface of Alaska made Seward a visionary leader and not a joke any more. Zain A. 814
"Sewards icebox" was what was thought to be as Alaska after Secretary of state William Seward negotiated and bought Alaska from Russia, as that was only what he wanted, which made people think the land was his, calling it Seward's icebox, because of all the snow in it. However, this statement was soon to be held false as many new great resources were found to be used from the land. -Mohamed Helal 814
"Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" means that William H. Seward ,who bought Alaska at a price of $7,200,000, wasn't popular for his decision. Instead, there was a huge uproar about this foolish decision. Many Americans thought Seward are a fool buying Alaska and many of them included Seward in their joke, criticizing him. Since Alaska were a land that has many unexplored tundra territories, it is considered a frozen land which gives birth to the statement "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox." Today, however,Alaska is a rich country filled with resources such as gold and oil that contributed to the American prosperity.
At the time the people of the US hadn't realized Alaska's valuable treasures that lied within its land due to their judgments on the outer layer which was literally just ice and snow. Therefore, they started to believe that Seward was a fool to have purchased such a large piece of junk for a price that we would all dream of having today. On the contrary, they all soon came to a realization that Alaska was something that they regret calling junk since they gained great fortune from all the gold that was found inside of it. Even Russia has some regrets to this day and today wouldn't truly be the same without a piece of land that us Americans would today call home. -Bryan Lieu 814
Very informative and great vocabulary usage. You could add some statements about the resources they had found underground and would add to prove why Seward was a visionary leader. -IM NOT PLAYING THESE GAMES
Many people were furious of Seward's decision of purchasing Alaska. They believed it was nothing but a big area of frozen land and only had fur. Due to the fact that Alaska held huge blocks of frozen land, people called it Seward's icebox, to insult his poor decision. However, years after the purchase, they discovered many useful resources underground like oil and even GOLD. Today, the Alaska purchase is one of the major reasons that America is held the way it is now. It is no longer frozen blocks of land, but homes to hundreds of thousands of people and is shown to bring many opportunities throughout history -Devin Xie
People who lived in America was reconstructing their countries while the government was purchasing Alaska. They put their angers on the people who wanted to purchase Alaska especially Seward. They simply consider Alaska a worthless lands covered with snows all the time. Therefore, people blame Seward for wasting and calling the purchase of Alaska "nothing but Seward's icebox".However, the discovery of gold in Alaska proved that this statement was false. Alaska was a land rich in resources such as oil, cooper, and gold.- Xinyi Huang(814)
"Alaska is nothing but Seward's icebox." means that Alaska is Seward's unwanted TRASH. Alaska was unexplored in the past and was considered TRASH in Russia's eyes. Therefore, Russia decided to sell Alaska, their TRASH, to people which Seward took the offer. As a result, Seward brought TRASH from Russia. Back then, iceboxes was the refrigerator of today. Alaska was full of ice and people commented that Alaska is nothing but Seward's icebox. This statement doesn't hold true today because today, Alaska has a lot of worth not like the TRASH it was back then when Seward brought it. Today, Alaska has rich resources which is petroleum. Petroleum is used to make oil which helps people a lot. They can sell oil to others to earn money. Today, Alaska is not the worthless TRASH it is in the past.
The statement means that people called this a waste and frozen land because it give no benefit to them. This was just a land that Russia want to get rid of because of lack of resources. In addition, this statement don't hold true today because we found many valuable resources on that land such as gold and oil which this made them change their view on Alaska and their opinion about Seward. Lastly, this made them earn a lot of money. YuXinOuYang814
This statement means that Alaska was a wasteland, because it does not benefit our country. It was only an unprofitable land that Russia wants to get rid of that Seward view it as an valuable land. However, as time goes on people are finding gold and oil under the land of Alaska. This has change their view on the land and Seward. It had help United State earn lots of money. -YanYing Wu 814
"Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox." means buying Alaska is useless to Russian because the land's available resources were all being taken by Russian, and leave it as a garbage land, but to Seward, it's different. He thinks that there's something that's available for his people because there's hidden treasures under the land of Alaska. Qiaoling Wu 814
when Russia got the idea of selling alaska,it was because their only source wasnt found in the land anymore, therefore it was considered as useless. since fur trading had declined due to the over killing of fur animals. william H. seward was interested on the idea, however it was hold back due to the civil war. when the war was finally over seward returned to his idea and bought the land. critics made fun of him and sometimes called it seward's icebox. because it was nothing but frozen land and their wasnt any profit assure.howbeit, today alaska has become a great land source for the land holds within huge treasures of gold and oil,and copper.alaska isnt as cold as it was, but its not the main subject of critics instead, we consider william. H. seward as a visionary person. -------------------------------------------------------- { JOCELINE AGUILAR 814 }

Seward's Icebox is the cold Alaska land that all you see is ice and lumber and nothing else, till you discover the inside.Seward bought it from Russia and was at the time quite useless to them until gold was struck once it was bought. This statement holds true to today since even today it is icy and cold, resources such as lumber and oil and few gold are found and used and more include copper, silver, mercury, platinum, tin, coal, iron ore, borax, chromite, antimony, tungsten, nickel, molybdenum, sand, gravel, and limestone.
Excellent explanation, you gave many examples of what was found in under the land. Good elaboration on explaining why the land is useless and how it's useful in the modern days.
"Alaska is nothing but Swards's Icebox", this quote means that the land is just a frozen land that is totally useless. Meaning by useless is before there used live animals and companies used to depend on their furs for making products, however, due to over killing of the animals the animals started to decline and ultimately the land became a useless land. Other than, that that land is frozen so it's not possible to farm as well. In the contrary, this statement does not hold true in the modern days. To elaborate, the land came more civilized meaning more factoring, buildings, roads etc..stared to grow and helped the economy of the United States. Moreover, it helped to increase the size of the U.S by 20% or 600,000 square miles. In addition, very fortunately in that land secretly treasures were hiding, meaning many gold and resources such as oil was hiding under that land , which was a huge support to the United States after the demolition of the civil War
Alaska is nothing but Seward's icebox is an argument/joke swept around the government. Seward try to purchase the land that's only a frozen land with nothing worthy, even the rich fur trade ceased. However, this statement wasn't true today, since after 20 years of purchase the land, they discover black gold/oil there and proven the statement of Seward was correct.

At the time money was very important since much of the country had been destroyed by war. Buying Alaska was a lot money and almost everyone was arguing that all that money could be used to repair a lot of the damage that the country has been bearing already. They said that "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" since it was almost all ice and also to humiliate William Seward for making the choice that he wants to buy Alaska. But they found out after a while that Alaska contained oil, gold, copper, silver, coal, etc. So when people were making fun of him for trying to buy Alaska they saw not too long afterwards that they were wrong and William Seward was not a fool but a visionary leader.
The statement "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" means that Alaska was just a land of nothing more, and nothing less than ice and worthlessness bought by Seward. However, in today's times, the statement is simply not true. The land was wealthy in valuable resources. Alaska was discovered to have gold underlying its surface of ice and trees as well as petroleum. It also had timber.
What,"Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" basically demonstrates the opinion on William H. Seward's purchase on Alaska, of many people during the time. This sort means to mean that people thought that Alaska was only a land that was frozen or cold because Alaska is a cold area. And that there was not anything that was specifically significant. Additionally, this statement is not true today. For instance, Alaska today has a large production of oil, coal, petroleum, gold, silver and copper. Further, Gold is a very valuable source because it does not scratch as easily.
Before people start to explore Alaska it was just a icebox but after people start to explore Alaska they find gold and also discover oil over time (oil is the most useful and most common fuel). Now as the result of global warming the ice of Alaska start to melt and there is building on it which mean it became a livable place from the icebox. by zhi cheng lin 814

Many people believe the land is invaluable visibly, and this lead to many people thinking that this land is only for Seward to keep. In other word, this is a trash land brought for 7.2 million dollar from Russia that people would describe as Seward icebox. jw 814
In addition to what I have said, the statement "Alaska is nothing but Sewards iceboxe" is a false statement today. About 20 years after the purchase of Alaska, huge amount of gold was discovered underneath the soil, and further discovery of oil made Alaska the top oils producer in America. Furthermore, copper, and other minerals essential to make someone rich was also discovered, meaning that buying Alaska isn't useless to US people but is actually useful to push the US into a world superpower. Jackie Wong 8-14
"Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" means that the Alaska that William H. Seward bought was nothing but a block a ice that has no advantages to it nor any benefits. When William H.

Due to the fact that Alaska held huge blocks of frozen land, people called it Seward's icebox, to insult his poor decision. DeleteThe statement "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox." is implying that the russians thought Alaska is "useless" because there is nothing there, but ice. There's no grass, no buildings, it is absolutely plain. It's only plain ice, and Russia didn't think it was valuable. It was sold for 7.2 million dollars, and then the american's ended up finding natural resources. so, at the end of the day Alaska was worth it afterall, and the Russian's were wrong. ~Rebecca Parker 813
ReplyDeletethe reason why it called the ice box because people thought it was land with a bunch if ice and snow.so after time has past people realize it more that ice and snow. alaska was more that than that people could live there , study the place ,and the land has gold . oscar 813 nodell
ReplyDeletei agree but there are other reasons why it is not the ice box anymore. like for example they found gold so many people now live there.

The statement "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" means that Alaska, the land that William Seward bought was just a ice filled wasteland. People thinks that he had made a bad choice by buying Alaska from Russia. This statement became untrue afterwards because now people are living there and there are resources there such as oil, gold, coal, and many others.
ReplyDelete- Jiayi Chen 813
i agree,
DeleteThe statement "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" shows that everyone was furious and wanted to insult at Seward because of the Alaska Purchase and thought it was useless, due to the lack of resources at that time. Everyone, but Seward, he was a visionary and only seek opportunities. Inaddition, the purchase was after the Civil War, which meant, many people needed the money that the government used to purchase Alaska. However, in 1880, Joe Juneau discovered gold in the Silverbowl of Alaska and most areas of Alaska isn't covered in ice.

"Alaska is nothing but a Seward's icebox", I believe this means that Alaska was believed to just be a place full of ice and has nothing but freezing cold water and was believed to have nothing valuable remaining in the land to trade. I believe this statement does not aplay today because Alaska is known today for its oil and is inhabited by people

ReplyDeleteThe statement indicates that the land that was bought by Seward is extremely cold. As it is referred as an icebox, this includes that the land isn't helpful since vegetation and plantation isn't able to grow because of the extreme coldness. However gold and oil was discovered and it proved that Alaska was not completely useless. Slowly Alaska's trading improved with other states of the United Stated. Later Seward's decision of purchasing Alaska proved to be quite successful.

During 1867, William Seward (Secretary of State) wanted to buy Alaska. However, many people go against it, since it's just a huge piece of ice land... People then call it Seward's icebox. The land were useless..it doesn't have anything but ice. But, later on, after Seward purchase it, people found useful resources right under the land. Including oil and gold!! Now days, Alaska isn't a piece of land for mining gold and oil, but a normal state for people to live in, and etc
