"Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox." Explain in your own words what this statement means. Then explain whether this statement holds true today.

  1. Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox means that since Seward purchased Alaska it was his frozen wasteland. This statement is not true because once people started finding out there was gold here they went to Alaska persuing there dream of getting rich. Also, the fact that there was oil under the surface of Alaska made Seward a visionary leader and not a joke any more. Zain A. 814

    2. "Sewards icebox" was what was thought to be as Alaska after Secretary of state William Seward negotiated and bought Alaska from Russia, as that was only what he wanted, which made people think the land was his, calling it Seward's icebox, because of all the snow in it. However, this statement was soon to be held false as many new great resources were found to be used from the land.

  2. "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" means that William H. Seward ,who bought Alaska at a price of $7,200,000, wasn't popular for his decision. Instead, there was a huge uproar about this foolish decision. Many Americans thought Seward are a fool buying Alaska and many of them included Seward in their joke, criticizing him. Since Alaska were a land that has many unexplored tundra territories, it is considered a frozen land which gives birth to the statement "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox." Today, however,Alaska is a rich country filled with resources such as gold and oil that contributed to the American prosperity.

  3. At the time the people of the US hadn't realized Alaska's valuable treasures that lied within its land due to their judgments on the outer layer which was literally just ice and snow. Therefore, they started to believe that Seward was a fool to have purchased such a large piece of junk for a price that we would all dream of having today. On the contrary, they all soon came to a realization that Alaska was something that they regret calling junk since they gained great fortune from all the gold that was found inside of it. Even Russia has some regrets to this day and today wouldn't truly be the same without a piece of land that us Americans would today call home.

  4. Many people were furious of Seward's decision of purchasing Alaska. They believed it was nothing but a big area of frozen land and only had fur. Due to the fact that Alaska held huge blocks of frozen land, people called it Seward's icebox, to insult his poor decision. However, years after the purchase, they discovered many useful resources underground like oil and even GOLD. Today, the Alaska purchase is one of the major reasons that America is held the way it is now. It is no longer frozen blocks of land, but homes to hundreds of thousands of people and is shown to bring many opportunities throughout history

They simply consider Alaska a worthless lands covered with snows all the time. Therefore, people blame Seward for wasting and calling the purchase of Alaska "nothing but Seward's icebox".However, the discovery of gold in Alaska proved that this statement was false. Therefore, Russia decided to sell Alaska, their TRASH, to people which Seward took the offer. As a result, Seward brought TRASH from Russia. Back then, iceboxes was the refrigerator of today. Alaska was full of ice and people commented that Alaska is nothing but Seward's icebox. This statement doesn't hold true today because today, Alaska has a lot of worth not like the TRASH it was back then when Seward brought it. Today, Alaska has rich resources which is petroleum. 13. "Alaska is nothing but Swards's Icebox", this quote means that the land is just a frozen land that is totally useless. Meaning by useless is before there used live animals and companies used to depend on their furs for making products, however, due to over killing of the animals the animals started to decline and ultimately the land became a useless land. Other than, that that land is frozen so it's not possible to farm as well. In the contrary, this statement does not hold true in the modern days. To elaborate, the land came more civilized meaning more factoring, buildings, roads etc..stared to grow and helped the economy of the United States. Moreover, it helped to increase the size of the U.S by 20% or 600,000 square miles. In addition, very fortunately in that land secretly treasures were hiding, meaning many gold and resources such as oil was hiding under that land , which was a huge support to the United States after the demolition of the civil War

Buying Alaska was a lot money and almost everyone was arguing that all that money could be used to repair a lot of the damage that the country has been bearing already. They said that "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" since it was almost all ice and also to humiliate William Seward for making the choice that he wants to buy Alaska. But they found out after a while that Alaska contained oil, gold, copper, silver, coal, etc. So when people were making fun of him for trying to buy Alaska they saw not too long afterwards that they were wrong and William Seward was not a fool but a visionary leader.

  19. What,"Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" basically demonstrates the opinion on William H. Seward's purchase on Alaska, of many people during the time. This sort means to mean that people thought that Alaska was only a land that was frozen or cold because Alaska is a cold area. And that there was not anything that was specifically significant. Additionally, this statement is not true today. For instance, Alaska today has a large production of oil, coal, petroleum, gold, silver and copper. Further, Gold is a very valuable source because it does not scratch as easily.

Additionally, this includes that Alaska land isn't helpful since vegetation and plantation isn't able to grow because of the extreme coldness. Furthermore, although fur trading took place in Alaska, the animal population was decreasing for over kill, as a result Alaska purchase was referred as useless. However, later on gold and oil discoveries took place which disproves the statement that Alaska was completely useless. The statement "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox." mean that Seward purchase Alaska which was nothing but a icebox or Seward's "freezer"; in other words Seward brought a frozen land and people made fun of him for that since there is no resourse on Alaska. However in Seward's eyes he saw something different.Althought people made fun of him that statement doesn't hold true today because resourse was soon found in Alaska and Seward was a complete fool that people thought but a leader. -Vanessa Chan 813

  54. "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" This statement means that buying Alaska was a mistake because there was nothing valuable things to buy in Alaska just Alaska itself with cold weather and land and had no benefits. This statement isn't true because he eventually bought the land and found valuables.

  55. There are many ways to describe the quote " Alaska is nothing but Seward's icebox " and if it is true to this date. During that time everyone thought that Seward was a fool for wanting to buy this land. Everyone made jokes about him and said harsh about his idea. However, Alaska was bought after for 7,200,000 dollars. Amazingly this frozen land was found full of gold! Men after men moved there in hope of hitting it big and becoming wealthy. So i do believe that Alaska was once his ice box but not today. Alaska is now full of other resources and is the 49th state of the United States.

  56. The statement "Alaska is nothing but Sewards Icebox" means that when Seward purchased Alaska it was his frozen land where he traded fur and ice, this case did not give any beneficial credit to anyone in the land that some people referred to as the "waste land". This statement is not true because Alaska was full of useful resources that many people found useful as a living. For example oil, gold and many other resources.

There's no grass, no buildings, it is absolutely plain. It's only plain ice, and Russia didn't think it was valuable. It was sold for 7.2 million dollars, and then the american's ended up finding natural resources. so, at the end of the day Alaska was worth it afterall, and the Russian's were wrong. ~Rebecca Parker 813

The statement "Alaska is nothing but Seward's Icebox" shows that everyone was furious and wanted to insult at Seward because of the Alaska Purchase and thought it was useless, due to the lack of resources at that time. Everyone, but Seward, he was a visionary and only seek opportunities. Inaddition, the purchase was after the Civil War, which meant, many people needed the money that the government used to purchase Alaska. However, in 1880, Joe Juneau discovered gold in the Silverbowl of Alaska and most areas of Alaska isn't covered in ice.
