Social Reform

You have been working in a hat factory since 1900, when you were eight years old. Now you are experienced enough to run one of the sewing machines. You don’t earn as much as older workers, but your family needs every penny you bring home. Still, the long hours make you very tired. One day you hear that people are trying to stop children from doing factory work. They think that children should be at school or playing.
Would you be for or against this social reform? Why?

  1. I would be against this reform. To begin with, I would only be against this reform due to the fact that my family is in poverty and they need every penny that i bring in. If i was in favor of this reform and wanted children to be at school and playing then i would not be able to help my family out and it would hurt them even more. Even if it makes me tired working for so long, i would still do anything to help my family out. Given these points, I would disagree with this reform.

  3. while some people are for social reforms I may be against it. I'm against social reforms because if I was in a situation of in need for money I must work in order to support my family. Carrying on, there should be no changes in society because once you have been working in a factory for a long time you are an experienced worker especially working in one factory for 8 years.

That is a good point to bring up. If you have been working for a long time in the factories, then you would get used to everything and your job would be easier. Then again, working a long time in factories can lead to diseases that you have gained from the horrible working conditions.

I am against this social reform of children having to go to school. Even though educations is a high priority for me, my family values come first. If my family needed every penny that I brought from work, then I would stay with my job. If I went along with this social reform, my family, including myself, would starve to death. Of course, working is tiring, but having a job is better than nothing. Moreover, if I do choose education, I wouldn't be sure of my future because the only profession that my family would have ever had would be working in factories. To summarize my point, I would stay with my job and be against this social reform.

  6. If that was an option I would have to be against the social reform ,though I would rather play or go to school then go to the factory and work. However, if my own family was indigent I would have no choice than to continue working in the factory. If working there prevented my family from living in the streets I'll willingly do it. Furthermore, if I would have stopped working, there might be the possibility of not being able to go to get an education or play, and would still have to live in poverty.

  7. I would not go to school or go play instead of working in the factory and following the social reform. To begin with, even though going to school and playing would be easer than working long hours I would still choose to supply my family with money and food that they need. Moreover, if I do go to school there might be problems with my famly such as financial problems that we need to pay and who is making that money? Me i have to, becouse if i dont then it means losing my house and starving. This is why I would not listen to this social reform and I would continue working to improve the life of me and my family.

Tbh, I'm not on either side. The reason why I'm not for or against this social reform is because your family is poor and you basically don't have enough support to help raise the family. And back during that time era, every little penny counts and if the child stops working, then they won't be able to pay for the house and for the food. But, when the children are working, they go pass their limits. By that, I meant how they would work as long as everybody else and would get tired, and lack of sleep. Child labor is bad since they're just kids working in horrible conditions and yet, they need to go to school and they can't do both at the same time. Working in an hour would probably earn you like, 10 cents and that's still not enough for the whole family. Going to school, you still needed to pay for the school fees, books and so on. Either way, you still needed to work whether you're educated or not and there's basically no difference except for the fact that you're going to school.

  9. i would be against this social reform even if i want to agree because i need to work very hard to earn money for my family. yes, its true that children should go to school and play outside and do something that normal children would do but the thing is, their family are going through some financial problem if they dont help them work then they would starve etc. each penny that they earn from working could help their family. so yes i would help out my parents and put aside my education .

  16. I have two different view points in this situation. I am both for and against it.

I am for this social reform because us children need an education. We need to go about their lives with knowledge. Our education is important to get a new and maybe better job than the ones we have now.

I am against this social reform because my family needs the money. No matter how low the pay is we need every cent. I don't care if I get lower pay then the adults. My family needs the money.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I believe that children should be allowed to go to school in that time because children deserve an education therefore in adulthood they can start and run their own business. Poor families at the time would need very penny they can possibly get to feed an support their family but Business and factory owners should give their wokers the pay they deserve

  18. I would be against social form. It is because, if my family is working very hard for money, i would support them and help them earn even more. Even though education is very important, your family should come first. And furthermore, you have been working in the same factory for many years and are already used to it. What if the school you are going needs money and you cant go back to the same factory you were in again. Also, if i stopped working, there would be a 50 chance of getting education or not. So, in my opinion, it is better to lose education then losing a job since you are very poor.

  19. I would be for this reform because i think that kids shoukd go to school and play and not work. Because they're not old enough to start working, they need to learn and be kids. Thebkids that work are just growimg up to fast. Even though the kids and the families are in poverty the kids are not responsible for that. The only responsible ones are the parents, they shouldnt put the kids to work.

  20. I would be for this movement because kids should be able t ave education so they could earn even more more than the few dollars a day they have at the factory. Also school is a much safer place than working. Also the children might lack social skills if they stay at the factory. Also to earn money, the parents should try to work harder. Instead of being at the lowest point of all the workers they should work harder and be at a higher point than they are now. This way they could get money and the child could get educated.

Although I was an experienced woerker working since I was 8, I did not earn as much as older men. This relates to my opinion because if children were to have an oppurtunity in learning, they might be able to get a better and well paying jobs. Education can give us experience and informaton that we will need in the future. If the children were to work now, they would still earn very little money. In addition, they will let thier children to work and have no education and this cycle will continue. When this happens, the family will not enjoy or live thier new life. They will just be stuck doing hardwork with no one persuing an education, a better life.

  57. I would go for social reform because in my opinion kid this age should be in school and learn what they supposed to know.however parent always want them to go to work and earn more money but they don't know how they feel of been in the factory for the whole day working.if kids go to school they can get a better job and earn more and more money than just staying in the factory earning that little money.

  58. i can say i will would be against this social reform even if i want to agree because i need to work very hard to earn money for my family. yes, its true that children should go to school and play outside and do something that normal children would do but the thing is, their family are going through some financial problem if they dont help them work then they would starve etc. each penny that they earn from working could help their family. so yes i would help out my parents and put aside my education .

  60. yalin zhang 813 I will totally agree on social reforms because children should have the right to play and having education. It is dangerous that you are standing right up to the machine because you could get injured or could died. Also, if we are working for a long hour, little money, it is wasting our childhood.

    1. Some people wanted to work. Would you want to take away even a single penny from a poverty stricken family? Would you steal away even just a slice of bread from a poor starving family? When it is put like that it almost sounds cruel.

  61. I would be for the social reform because I think children should go o school and have fun instead of working factories that kill them. Having children work in factories is not fair, even though they have to make money for their family , but it's not right Davlatbek Hushvaktov 813

I believe that there should be a compromise. School should be available for free to the families that want their kids to attend but children should be allowed to work if need be. I believe that there should be a choice in the matter for those who want to work or those who want education.

  63. I agree with this social reform. If you spend time in school and get better education, you'll get better job when you grow up, which means you earn more money for your family.

  65. I agree with social reform because it is unfair that children need to worked for long hours and suffer for long hours but only got back very less paid, they need to go to school to got better education and knowledge. If they had better education they will got better jobs when they become adult they don't need to suffer at factory, better jobs need good education.Another reason that I agree to social reform that children had right to play with their friends and went to school to learn. But this can not happen to them at that time period and social reform are group who think that children should stop working, social reform could bring the right and freedom back to children. That is why I agree with social reform.

  70. i would go against this social reform because family need their children make money to support their family so that will have have money to buy food and clothes. Don't matter how much money's children were making, at least they have money to bring home everyday !If children went to school they don't have moneys to buy supplies for school, and the family don't have money to support their life. Then, a lot of people will become homeless and huger

  72. a bit of both childhood is a important part of life, where you face the hardships of life,it is a time of learning and training for life ahead of you but during this time period many families were out of job, struggling to live.Boys of the famly would want to work and repay their families for raising him.Every amount of money the boy brings in the better it gets for the family.Child labor should exist but not hard work but like a paperboy, lawn mower etc.Alvin Gaine 802
