I don't think that Congress always acted honorably because not everyone thinks that the restriction laws were fair since it was excluding the Chinese people from their own kind. And according to their own experiences, they think that they have more social power than others. Maybe they think that living in the US may have a much better life and to support the family despite the fact that they will be in despairity for leaving their families and relatives in their hometown.

I would rate these restriction acts a 3.Although it did keep immigrants out of America, it also severed political bonds with other countries. I think this act was a little unfair because after everything that the Chinese immigrants did for America(transcontinental railroad,mining)the Americans kick the Chinese out.

And considering that jobs were in short supply at this time, congress probably thought it was reasonable. These laws were not right and didn't support the American dream, but many Americans supported it anyway. Immigrants from some places were still allowed. That makes me think if maybe that's how congress justified the exclusion act but it was really just out of dislike for certain groups. But who knows? DeleteI think that congress passed the exclusion acts probably because they're afraid of people stealing their jobs. For example, since the Chinese went to america to fnd jobs, they might take the american's job. I think that the exclusion acts is full of crap. 1/10. This is because congress or americans themselves can make jobs. For example, making things and selling them to other people to make money. Also when you exclude them out such as putting them in a prison, you are showing them a bad impression of what america actually is. In my opinion, anyone who wants to live in america can go there. Too much population? build more house. Too little jobs? do small jobs like selling things or doing small jobs. Also americans can tax the immigrants and make more money.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason why Congress passed laws restrict immigrants is because they wanted the local people have a chance to get a job instead of taken by the immigrants. These restriction acts would be rated 2 because they do benefit the local people, but they also angered the immigrants since these laws treated them differently from the native group. In my opinion, everyone should have the equal chance of living in the United States because according to the founders of the U.S.,everyone is created equally. Furthermore, the founders of this country were also immigrants. how is that reasonable if the people wanted to banned the groups who were from the same place as their ancestors?

Congress passed some of these restriction acts because maybe it was during the Great Depression, where the stock market crashed and there were no jobs for the Americans. I would rate the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act a 5 because at that time, there was not many jobs. If the government had let Chinese immigrants in the US, then the Chinese immigrants could work for those jobs for low pay. I would rate the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924 a 5 because it's the same thing with the 1882 Chinese Exlusion Act because if you let them in, then Americans would have no job. The immigrants from Europe could work for low pay. I think there should be some restrictions on immigrant. For example, immigrants can;t work in the US until they had been here for one year.

I think Congress passes some of these restriction acts because it wants to limit immigrants from coming into US. For example, these laws are aim specifically at some countries, such as, China and Europe. Other times, it aims at classes of people, like, criminals, paupers, and the mentally ill ones.

I think Congress passed the exclusion acts because they are afraid of the fact that the immigrants would come into the country and take their jobs (even though some of the Americans thought the jobs were too good for them). It was out of the fear of the unknown. I think those laws were kind of effective (3) because it did keep out millions of chinese immigrant until the 1943. It wasn't very effective because even though it did keep out millions of chinese immigrant, but the chinese immigrants did not give up, at the end, they still got in. I think that anyone who wants to live in America can live here because America is a free country, other people from their country can live here if they want to. Plus it is not fair that they can't choose to live here, if you can, they can.

Maybe the congress felt that the new immigrants will take over the jobs and the economy might collapse. In addition, congress wanted to keep out the bad people such as the mentally ill to keep their country powerful. If a lot of immigrants come into the country, there might be few jobs available so they might become criminals thus this is why restrictions were made. I would rate these acts a 3 because it did block out many immigrants but some were able to get in because they were rich. The acts were made but not everyone was blocked out of the country. I believe that if someone would want to come to America and live here, they could come but i think there should be some restriction. It wouldn't be so strict but they should have laws to check the immigrants background. They shouldn't be allowing bad criminals in the country because they would create chaos.

The effectiveness would rank at a 3. This is because it kept some people out of the country. But for the most part many people came in to the country. People should be allowed in the country......HOWEVER, there would be many guide lines. One rule would be to only allow people who don't have a bad criminal record.

Imagine you are a company owner you wouldn't want someone who can't do anything to help you company. It the same for congress too, they don't want anyone who is not profitable for America. Plus, most of the immigrants were poor, the government can't help so many people at the same time. I rate it a 4/5 because their plan actually worked. Chinese immigrants didn't come into the country and stayed at the Angel Island. However, the idea wasn't a good idea at all. They shouldn't have discriminated the Asian immigrants. Instead the Congress had to pass out the law to check all new immigrants the same way. They should be checking for any diseases and illnesses. They should also see the jobs the new immigrant had worked at in their native country. They should be checking the records. For example, if you have been to prison or have ran a business before. Every ethnicity should be treated equally.
