Indian Surrender

Upon surrendering to the United States Army in 1890, Chief Joseph the Younger 0840-1904) of the Nez Perce Indians spoke the following Words:
“. . . Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From Where the sun
now stands, I will fight no more forever.”

Imagine you are a Nez Perce Indian. Explain how you would feel after bearing these words. Then imagine you are a US. soldier who has been fighting against the Nez Perce Indians. Explain how you would feel after bearing Chief Joseph's words.

    if i were a nez perce native american i would be really upset but i would understand that our chief knows best and i would follow his commands and back down. if i were an american soldier i would be so happy cause we were fighting the native american for a while and they were a tuff match

    If I were a Nez Perce Indian,I feel upset,because we going to win and Chief Joseph tell us to stop.
    If i were a U.S. soldier,I feel relive,because we going to died and their Chief tell Nez Perce Indian to stop the war.I would feel happy about it,i don't want to die.

    If I were the Nez Perce indians I will feel upset because the cheif igorne me and continue make me fight even when I said I am very tired but I still want to win the war. If I were the Americans, I will be feeling happy for our closes victory and I will also be feeling sad for the Native Amercians.

      Yes, also that if Nez Perce Indians gave up,I would have feel like we have already won.

    I would feel bad for him because he has work so hard and now he has no strength from fighting with the Americans. At the same time i would feel betrayed that the person who was been leading us through the war is now all of a sudden unable to help us win the war.

      I agree with you Benjamin, I would also feel bad for him because all this war has made him very ill and unable to continue in the noble fight.I would also feel abandon by his absence.

    If I am a Nez Perce Indian, I will feel hopeless to hear those words because we were fighting for ourselves before, but now even the leader is giving up.If I am a U.S. soldier who fight against Nez Perce Indians ,I would feel that we are free since I have to fight no more.

      I agree with what you said because they lose their land while whited gained the land. It showed a dramatic contrast.

    If i was a new Indian i would fell so sad and i will understand his felling that he tried a lot but now he is really tired he can't hold it anymore> and it i was a U>S soldier i would fell so happy that indian finally understood that we are more powerful and strong

    If I am a Nez Perce , I will feel upset because we just working hard for so many days , we cannot be give up . If I am a U.S soldier , I will feel happy because we do not need to continue fighting and we win the battle .

    If I were the Nez Perce Indians, I will be upset because Joesph didn't ask our opinion, and make the decision on his own.
    If I were the U.S. soldiers, I will feel happy, because no one are going to die, and the state will be peace.

    If I was a Nez Perce Indian, I would've felt loyal to Chief because he was the leader and I would not let him down, but I would've also felt sad because he surrendered after all our hard work of fighting. If I was a U.S. soldier, I would've felt disgraced by his leadership since he let his soldiers down, but I would've also felt lucky since I lived this war.

    I'm a Nez Perce Indian I feel sad to give up on our land and have nothing left,but only have the choice to settle on somewhere else. Instead of earn what we should earn we just lost everything happiness,families and others. I'm a U.S solider I feel happy to win the war between the Nez Perce Indians. I as a soldiers also feel sad to cause death but because of war i had no choice.

    i would feel angry and bad because the chief is not fighting anymore. Somewhere i will also agree with the chief because i feel no matter what it is we should not kill people. But if i was a soldier and chief joseph ad said that i would feel used, defeated and low in confidence. Then i would definetly try to convince the cheif.

    If I am a Nez Perce Indian, I will feel angry because it is only Chief Joseph's opinion
    not everybody.If I am a US. soldier who has been fighting against the Nez Perce Indians, I will feel comfortable to not kill anybody.

    If i were a Nez Perce Indian I would feel after bearing these words that my leader is tell us fight so long and we did not get anything pay and I will feel that my side is loser. If i were a soldier who has been fighting against the Nez Perce Indian I feel after bearing Chief Joseph's word is that it is good that we don't need to fight and there will be less people die. But in some way I might think that our side didn't win the war, we win it because they give up. So I'am not that proud of my side.

    If I were a Indian, I would've felt a little down knowing that we have given up and surrendered to a battle we could have won if we hung in there for a little longer. However, on the flip side, if I were a American soldier, I would've been happy and proud because I could finally stop fighting and also, after a long battle, we won.

    if i were an indian i would feel a dispointed because fighting so much being surrendered to a battle that u could win if we stayed a little bit longer. and talking about american soldiers they must have celebrated their victory so proud of winning

    If I was a Nez Perce Indian, I would be outraged because we should fight for what we believe in and not give up. In addition, If I was U.S soldier I would be thrilled because, first of all we won, and secondly, we don't have to fight against the Nez Perce Indians anymore.

    1. I will have fell very sad if we are about to win becuase that we are so close to win but we have to stop it for some reason but if we are so close to lose than I will fell happy if we stop the war when we are close to lose but I am still no happy because that we still lose also I will still sad that many people have die in the war.

    If I'm a Nez Perce Indian, I would felt indignant to hear what leader had spoken because it's our land and we should fought for it, instead of gave up to those whites. In other hand, if I'm a U.S soldier, I would felt pleasant and freed because we won the war and we didn't to fight anymore. Plus our country was further expanded to the West.

    i agree that Nez Perce indian gave up because it can cause a blood war that maybe wont end. But U.S wining and Nez Perce Indian not land to stay on.
